Principal Product Designer   $200,000 USD/year

Description

LearnWithAI powers the platform behind Alpha School, a proven learning model already delivering measurable outcomes. Students complete their core academics in two hours daily and consistently score in the top percentiles on national assessments. The model is expanding rapidly across the United States and internationally. What's needed now is someone who thinks constantly about the people using it.

Your role is to establish what design excellence means here, create the standards, and build the design function from the ground up. Your domain includes our learning platform and its suite of supporting applications, serving diverse user groups both within Alpha and beyond.
Consider a five-year-old who hasn't learned to read yet, discovering numbers through an experience that must transform learning into something that feels like discovery. Or a high school student two grade levels behind, working to regain confidence after repeated academic setbacks—a single unclear interaction could undo that progress. Think about a parent who finally understands how their child learns, gaining clarity that reduces worry and enables better support. Picture an academic coach overseeing a classroom with students of varying ages who needs actionable insight without being overwhelmed by metrics. Your challenge is understanding each group well enough to make truly distinct design decisions for each.

You own the experience layer: conduct deep user research across these audiences, translate findings into design principles engineers can implement directly, and deliver code-ready outputs that ship immediately rather than mockups awaiting interpretation. You collaborate with product leaders accountable for results and engineers responsible for delivery. When requirements compromise user experience, you challenge them. Ownership is complete.

AI serves as your multiplier to accelerate iteration and expand coverage, but your judgment—not automated suggestions—determines what gets released. Primary focus is our education platform, with occasional involvement in other product areas.

What you will be doing

  • Conduct user research spanning fundamentally different audience segments and develop design principles that reflect that understanding
  • Establish and maintain design systems embedded within each product's native UI framework, enabling faster engineering delivery and cumulative design value rather than fragmentation
  • Develop functional prototypes that allow product leaders to validate decisions in days rather than weeks
  • Evaluate existing products through the user lens: identify experience breakdowns, pinpoint engagement costs, and determine high-impact improvements
  • Establish design culture: structure feedback processes, define trade-off evaluation methods, and determine which standards are non-negotiable
  • Collaborate with product leaders and engineering teams, challenging requests that compromise user experience

What you will NOT be doing

  • Setting product strategy; that belongs to product leaders—you ensure the experience delivers on it
  • Creating static mockups requiring translation to code
  • Focusing on a single product; your scope covers the entire portfolio
  • Waiting for complete design briefs; you extract context from ambiguous inputs and begin designing despite information gaps
  • Requesting approval to act; you possess the authority to surface and resolve UX issues independently

Candidate requirements

  • Minimum 5 years in product design or UX positions, with complete ownership spanning research through production release
  • Clear demonstration of user empathy and research rigor across audiences substantially different from yourself
  • Established design expertise in interaction and visual design, supported by a portfolio demonstrating audience-tailored solutions over generic approaches, combined with well-defined design perspectives
  • Track record of AI-enabled workflows: rapid iteration, discerning evaluation, and willingness to reject initial AI-generated outputs when appropriate
  • Capability to convert designs into functional code leveraging AI tools and contemporary frameworks
  • Experience building a design function and establishing culture from scratch rather than joining mature organizations
