Senior Product Designer   $200,000 USD/year

Description

You'll be joining a validated educational model already delivering measurable results at Alpha School. LearnWithAI powers the platform beneath it and is scaling rapidly across the US and internationally. Students complete their core academics in two hours daily and achieve top national percentile rankings. The approach is effective. What's needed now is someone who thinks constantly about the people using it.

Your role is to establish design standards, define excellence, and build this function from the ground up. You'll focus on our learning platform and its related applications, serving diverse user groups both within and beyond Alpha.
Consider a five-year-old who hasn't learned to read yet, discovering numbers through an interface that must transform novelty into playful engagement. Or a teenager working two grade levels below target, rebuilding self-belief after years of academic setbacks—a single unclear interaction could undo that progress. A parent who finally understands their child's learning journey experiences relief that transforms them into an active partner. An academic coach overseeing a multi-age classroom requires visibility into progress without information overload. You must understand each user deeply enough to make fundamentally distinct design decisions for each context.

You own the experience layer: conduct thorough user research for each audience, transform insights into actionable design principles that engineers implement directly, and deliver production-ready code outputs that launch immediately rather than conceptual mockups awaiting approval. You collaborate with product leaders responsible for outcomes and engineers who deploy working software. You challenge requests that compromise user experience. You maintain complete ownership.

AI serves as your force multiplier for accelerated iteration and expanded scope, but your expertise—not automated suggestions—determines what reaches users. Primary emphasis remains our education platform, with select initiatives in additional domains.

What you will be doing

  • Conduct user research spanning fundamentally different audience segments and develop design principles reflecting that understanding
  • Develop and sustain design systems integrated directly within each product's UI framework, enabling faster engineering deployment and cumulative design value rather than scattered approaches
  • Deliver functional prototypes enabling product leaders to validate decisions within days rather than weeks
  • Evaluate existing products through the user lens: identify experience breakdowns, pinpoint engagement barriers, and determine high-impact improvements
  • Establish design culture: structure feedback mechanisms, approach trade-off evaluation, and identify non-negotiable quality standards
  • Collaborate with product leaders and engineering teams, challenging requests that compromise user experience

What you will NOT be doing

  • Setting product strategy; product leaders maintain ownership while you ensure experience execution aligns
  • Creating static visual mockups requiring code translation
  • Focusing on a single product; your scope encompasses the complete portfolio
  • Executing against rigid design briefs; you synthesize context from ambiguous inputs and begin designing with partial information
  • Waiting for authorization; you possess autonomy to identify and resolve UX issues proactively

Candidate requirements

  • Minimum 5 years in product design or UX positions, demonstrating complete ownership from research through production deployment
  • Clear evidence of user empathy and research rigor across demographics distinct from yourself
  • Established design excellence in interaction and visual disciplines, with portfolio demonstrating audience-tailored solutions beyond standard patterns, combined with well-formed design perspectives
  • Proven AI-integrated workflow: rapid iteration capability, critical evaluation skills, and willingness to reject initial AI-generated output rather than defaulting to acceptance
  • Capability to convert designs into functional code leveraging AI tools and contemporary frameworks
  • Prepared to construct design function and culture from inception rather than adopting existing systems
