Student Learning Coach   $120,000 USD/year

Description

  • $120,000 annual W2 salary paid weekly, with health, dental, and vision benefits starting day one
  • On-site role at an Alpha K-8 school in Beverly Hills, CA; La Jolla (San Diego), CA; Palo Alto, CA; Piedmont, CA; Santa Monica, CA; South Bay (LA), CA; Greenwich, CT; Boca Raton, FL; Fort Lauderdale, FL; Miami, FL; Miami Beach, FL; Palm Beach Gardens, FL; Chicago, IL; Boston, MA; Raleigh, NC; Charlotte, NC; Portland, OR; or Seattle, WA (relocation assistance available)

This role is about motivation, not teaching.

When a student reaches 99% of their goal, the most supportive response is to insist they finish. If that principle feels uncomfortable, this role is not for you. If it energizes you because maintaining high expectations is how you demonstrate belief in a student's potential, continue reading.

At Alpha, students complete academic work through AI-driven applications. There are no lectures or textbooks. Approximately 60% of your time is spent facilitating one-hour life-skills workshops covering topics like public speaking, focus, and constructive feedback. Around 30% of your time involves meeting with students individually or in small groups, examining their progress via Coachbot analytics, and guiding each one toward their weekly app targets. The remaining 10% is dedicated to analyzing data and translating insights into the following week's coaching strategy. You will not follow a rigid script; workshops serve as frameworks, and the most effective coaches modify them and create new content when needed.

Success in a semester means at least 90% of students in your cohort meet their weekly app goals, demonstrate measurable improvement in life skills on Test2Pass, and rate their experience with you at 4 out of 5 or higher. Falling short on any of these three metrics means the role's objectives are not being met. Once you demonstrate your ability to maintain standards, advancement opportunities open to Lead Guide—where you mentor newer Guides while continuing to lead a cohort—and eventually to Campus Lead, where you oversee an entire school and manage parent relationships.

If you prefer traditional teaching methods, expect to receive a fully prepared curriculum, or view warmth and rigor as incompatible, this position will not suit you. If your background includes athletic coaching, camp counseling, tutoring where you refused to let students give up, or performance experience that enabled you to engage a room of 12-year-olds, the final step before receiving an offer is spending a full day on campus coaching actual Alpha students. If that prospect excites you most, submit your application today.

What you will be doing

  • Facilitating one-hour life-skills workshops for K-8 cohorts on topics including public speaking, focus, giving and receiving feedback, and other essential skills, modifying the existing playbook and creating new sessions when you identify a need
  • Conducting daily individual and small-group motivation sessions that guide every student toward their weekly app goals, leveraging Coachbot analytics, Alpha's incentive structures (school currency, leaderboards), and your personal relationship with each student to overcome resistance
  • Administering Test2Pass (Alpha's mastery-based assessment) for each life skill, and working with students who do not pass until they achieve mastery
  • Adjusting your coaching approach across a broad age spectrum, from kindergarteners who require high energy and physical activity to 8th graders who respond to direct conversation and accountability
  • Serving as the adult who maintains high standards and the adult students want to confide in; warmth establishes your credibility to challenge them, and challenging them demonstrates your confidence in their abilities

What you will NOT be doing

  • Delivering lectures at a whiteboard; academic content is handled by the apps, not by you
  • Developing curriculum from the ground up; you animate an established playbook with energy and narrative
  • Passively monitoring students at computers; motivation in this role is active, personal, and sustained
  • Reducing a weekly goal to make it easier for a student to achieve; when a student falls behind, the solution involves supporting the student, not lowering the target
  • Grading assignments, running standardized test preparation, or handling parent communications; Campus Leads manage parent-facing responsibilities, and the other tasks do not exist in this model

Key responsibilities

Ensure that every student in your K-8 cohort achieves their weekly learning goals, masters each life skill, and finishes the year with a positive view of their experience with you.

Candidate requirements

  • Willing to work on-site at an Alpha campus in Beverly Hills, CA; La Jolla (San Diego), CA; Palo Alto, CA; Piedmont, CA; Santa Monica, CA; South Bay (LA), CA; Greenwich, CT; Boca Raton, FL; Fort Lauderdale, FL; Miami, FL; Miami Beach, FL; Palm Beach Gardens, FL; Chicago, IL; Boston, MA; Raleigh, NC; Charlotte, NC; Portland, OR; or Seattle, WA (relocation assistance available)
  • Bachelor's degree in any subject
  • At least 3 years of direct experience working with K-8 students (classroom teaching, coaching, tutoring, camp counseling, or youth program leadership)
  • A specific example you can share of motivating a K-8 student to reach a challenging goal: the goal itself, your actions, and the result
  • Willingness to allow AI to manage instructional content while you concentrate on motivation and life-skills coaching
  • Legal authorization to work in the US without visa sponsorship

Nice to have

  • Experience in youth athletics coaching, debate, camp leadership, theater, or after-school programs where you held direct responsibility for motivating children toward specific objectives
  • Personal background of significant achievement (academic, athletic, or professional), such that holding others to rigorous standards is a natural inclination, not a learned behavior
  • Storytelling ability and stage presence sufficient to engage a room of 12-year-olds for an hour without needing to raise your voice
  • Demonstrated success converting disengaged or resistant students into active, engaged participants
