Student Success Coach   $120,000 USD/year

Description

  • $120,000 annual W2 compensation paid weekly, with health, dental, and vision benefits starting on day one
  • On-site position at an Alpha K-8 school in Beverly Hills, CA; La Jolla (San Diego), CA; Palo Alto, CA; Piedmont, CA; Santa Monica, CA; South Bay (LA), CA; Greenwich, CT; Boca Raton, FL; Fort Lauderdale, FL; Miami, FL; Miami Beach, FL; Palm Beach Gardens, FL; Chicago, IL; Boston, MA; Raleigh, NC; Charlotte, NC; Portland, OR; or Seattle, WA (relocation assistance available)

This role is not about teaching. It is about motivation.

The most meaningful support you can offer a student who reaches 99% of their target is to insist they finish. If that principle creates discomfort, this role is not for you. If it energizes you because maintaining high expectations is how you demonstrate belief in a student's ability, continue reading.

At Alpha, academic learning happens through AI-driven applications. There are no lectures or textbooks. Approximately 60% of your time is spent facilitating one-hour life-skills sessions on topics like public speaking, focus, and constructive feedback. Around 30% of your time involves meeting with students individually or in small groups, analyzing their progress via Coachbot data, and driving each toward their weekly app targets. The remaining 10% is dedicated to reviewing data and translating it into actionable coaching strategies for the following week. You will not follow a rigid script; sessions provide a framework, and the strongest performers in this role customize them and create new content when needs arise.

A successful semester means at least 90% of students in your cohort achieve their weekly app targets, demonstrate quantifiable improvement in life skills on Test2Pass, and give you a rating of 4 out of 5 or higher. Falling short on any of these three metrics means the role has not been fulfilled. Once you demonstrate your ability to uphold these standards, advancement opportunities open to Lead Guide — mentoring newer Guides while continuing to lead a cohort — and eventually to Campus Lead, where you oversee an entire school and manage parent engagement.

If you are drawn to conventional teaching, prefer structured curricula, or view warmth and rigor as incompatible, this is not the right fit. If your background includes athletic coaching, camp counseling, tutoring where you refused to let students give up, or performance experience that allowed you to captivate a group of 12-year-olds, the final hiring stage is a full day on campus working directly with Alpha students. If that prospect excites you most, submit your application now.

What you will be doing

  • Facilitating one-hour life-skills sessions for K-8 cohorts covering public speaking, focus, giving and receiving feedback, and other enduring competencies, customizing the framework and creating new sessions when you identify unmet needs
  • Conducting daily individual and small-group motivation meetings that drive every student toward their weekly app targets, leveraging Coachbot analytics, Alpha's motivational systems (school currency, leaderboards), and your personal connection with each student to overcome reluctance
  • Administering Test2Pass (Alpha's mastery-based evaluation) for each life skill, and continuing to coach students who do not achieve passing scores until mastery is demonstrated
  • Adjusting your coaching approach across a broad age spectrum, from kindergarteners requiring high energy and physical activity to 8th graders needing candid conversations and accountability
  • Serving as the adult who maintains high expectations and the adult students trust and seek out; warmth establishes the credibility to challenge, and challenging demonstrates your confidence in their potential

What you will NOT be doing

  • Delivering instruction at a whiteboard; academic content is embedded in the applications, not delivered by you
  • Creating curriculum from the ground up; you activate an established framework through energy and narrative skill
  • Monitoring students passively at computers; motivation in this role is dynamic, individualized, and persistent
  • Reducing a weekly target to enable a student to meet it; when a student falls behind, the solution is increased effort from the student, not adjustment of the goal
  • Grading assignments, running standardized test preparation, or handling parent outreach; Campus Leads manage parent-facing responsibilities, and the other tasks do not exist in this model

Key responsibilities

Ensure every student in your K-8 cohort achieves their weekly learning targets, demonstrates mastery of each life skill, and concludes the year expressing a positive connection with you.

Candidate requirements

  • Willing to work in-person at an Alpha campus in Beverly Hills, CA; La Jolla (San Diego), CA; Palo Alto, CA; Piedmont, CA; Santa Monica, CA; South Bay (LA), CA; Greenwich, CT; Boca Raton, FL; Fort Lauderdale, FL; Miami, FL; Miami Beach, FL; Palm Beach Gardens, FL; Chicago, IL; Boston, MA; Raleigh, NC; Charlotte, NC; Portland, OR; or Seattle, WA (relocation support provided)
  • Bachelor's degree in any subject
  • At least 3 years working directly with K-8 students (classroom teaching, coaching, tutoring, camp counseling, or youth program leadership)
  • A specific example you can describe of motivating a K-8 student to a hard goal: the goal, what you did, and the outcome
  • Willingness to let AI handle the instructional content while you focus on motivation and life-skills coaching
  • Legal right to work in the US without visa sponsorship

Nice to have

  • Experience in youth athletics coaching, debate, camp leadership, drama, or after-school programs where you were directly responsible for motivating kids toward specific goals
  • Personal history of high achievement (academic, athletic, or professional), such that holding others to a hard bar is a pattern, not a posture
  • Storytelling and stage presence strong enough to hold a room of 12-year-olds for an hour without raising your voice
  • Track record of turning disengaged or resistant students into active participants
