Learning and Development Manager   $150,000 USD/year

Description

  • On-site position in Dorado, Puerto Rico
  • $150,000 annual compensation, distributed weekly

This role is designed for individuals who have moved beyond conventional education models and are unwilling to compromise standards for comfort. You will guide students and adults toward ambitious goals through data and explicit benchmarks—not traditional lectures or scripted lesson plans.

Alpha School is developing an AI-enhanced education system in which students complete core academics in two hours daily, dedicating their afternoons to developing practical life competencies. The model rests on a clear, rigorous commitment: students enjoy learning, progress at twice the rate of their peers, and acquire essential life skills. Your responsibility is to ensure this commitment is fulfilled for every K–8 student at our Dorado location.

You will remain operationally engaged. You will facilitate one-hour life skills sessions, conduct structured motivation activities that advance student progress in academic applications, and coach Guides using direct feedback paired with actionable improvement steps. This is neither a conventional teaching position nor a detached management role. You will own outcomes, adherence to operational playbooks, and the maintenance of rigorous standards.

If you are ready to lead by example and cultivate a campus culture in which results are achieved through discipline, apply and demonstrate how you sustain high expectations without exception.

What you will be doing

  • Deliver one-hour life skills workshops to K–8 students by preparing materials and executing sessions in strict alignment with playbooks
  • Conduct structured motivation sessions designed to drive student advancement in academic applications and goal achievement
  • Observe Guide performance and provide standards-driven coaching, including specific improvement actions and accountability for follow-up
  • Apply objective, metrics-based judgment to maintain mastery standards, even in challenging circumstances
  • Work directly with campus personnel daily to ensure consistent execution of Alpha's 3 Promises

What you will NOT be doing

  • Deliver or tutor academic content using traditional classroom instruction methods
  • Develop lesson plans or create new curriculum materials
  • Deviate from prescribed playbooks or improvise workshop content
  • Compromise mastery benchmarks or adjust goals downward to simulate achievement
  • Manage remotely through administrative tasks while others execute direct work with students

Key responsibilities

Ensure every K–8 student at Alpha's Dorado campus reliably receives Alpha's 3 Promises: they love school, learn 2× faster, and build life skills.

Candidate requirements

  • Legal authorization to work in Puerto Rico
  • Capacity to work full-time on-site at the Dorado, Puerto Rico campus
  • Bachelor's degree
  • 5+ years of relevant experience coaching individuals to ambitious outcomes
  • Experience working with children ages 5–14 in coaching, motivation, or youth development contexts
  • Experience coaching or managing adult performance with defined standards and accountability
  • Strong verbal communication skills tailored to K–8 audiences
  • Data-driven decision-making capability (leveraging metrics and analytics to guide direction and enforce standards)
  • High-standards orientation with confidence delivering direct feedback and maintaining goals without compromise
