VP of Construction   $200,000 USD/year

Description

Opening a school is one thing. Doing it again and again—on schedule, on budget, and faster with each iteration—is a different discipline entirely.

Alpha is establishing a nationwide network of schools that condense a full day's worth of education into two concentrated hours powered by AI. For that model to succeed at scale, our expansion must be as disciplined and precise as our educational product. This position was created to ensure exactly that. You will take ownership of the complete lifecycle for new school sites—transforming raw locations into fully functioning campuses—while simultaneously developing the systems that make every future opening more efficient, streamlined, and reliable.

This is not a conventional development position. Your mandate is not simply to manage projects. Your mandate is to remove friction from our growth trajectory. That requires making definitive decisions on site feasibility, engaging directly with permitting and construction challenges, leading vendor negotiations, and maintaining aggressive timelines. In parallel, you will deconstruct each aspect of this process into structured, AI-enhanced workflows that minimize manual intervention and strengthen forecast precision over time.

If you have delivered real builds and find yourself frustrated by protracted timelines, unclear ownership boundaries, and recurring errors, this is your opportunity to solve those problems—at scale.

What you will be doing

  • Validate site viability through structured and AI-assisted evaluation of zoning, permitting requirements, cost projections, and timeline feasibility to support high-stakes location decisions
  • Manage multiple school construction projects concurrently, directing construction managers, clearing obstacles, and guaranteeing openings meet both schedule and budget
  • Produce clear, actionable capital project proposals that bring stakeholders into alignment on scope, budget, and execution approach
  • Direct vendor selection processes, RFPs, and contract negotiations with priority given to speed, quality standards, and cost management
  • Break down expansion workflows into discrete work units and create AI-powered systems that reduce timelines and increase reliability

What you will NOT be doing

  • Functioning as a passive coordinator who waits for updates from contractors or external partners
  • Limiting yourself to a single phase (such as only site selection or only construction management) without accountability for the complete result
  • Depending on manual, improvised methods that must be rebuilt for every new location
  • Raising issues upward without directly engaging to resolve permitting, design, or construction obstacles yourself
  • Consuming months in stakeholder alignment without advancing toward a concrete decision

Key responsibilities

Take full ownership of the end-to-end expansion process for new school locations by delivering fully operational campuses on reliable timelines while systematically decreasing time, cost, and risk through AI-powered systems.

Candidate requirements

  • Verified experience leading a minimum of one real estate development or construction project through its full lifecycle—from site selection to operational opening—with complete ownership
  • Track record managing multiple simultaneous builds or capital projects with direct accountability for schedules, coordination, and problem resolution
  • Deep working knowledge of zoning, permitting, construction processes, and vendor management, with capability to interact directly with general contractors, architects, and regulatory bodies
  • Proven capacity to make tradeoff decisions balancing cost, timeline, and feasibility with clear, quantifiable results
  • Experience refining or designing complex operational workflows (such as permitting processes, design coordination, or construction execution)
  • Demonstrated skill in decomposing complex workflows into structured, repeatable systems with continuous improvement
  • Track record of leveraging tools (AI or other technologies) to eliminate manual effort, speed decision-making, or enhance execution velocity
  • Strong ownership orientation with comfort operating in ambiguous environments and delivering tangible outcomes
  • Willingness and capacity to travel up to 60% to active school construction sites throughout the US and maintain on-site presence during critical development and launch phases
  • Current US location and authorization to work without requiring visa sponsorship
