Guide - Austin   $100,000 USD/year

Description

  • Austin, TX: on-site, relocation support provided
  • $100,000/year W2, paid weekly
  • Full-time: working directly with K-8 students daily

The most powerful thing you can do for a student isn't teach them algebra. It's convince them they're the kind of person who can figure out algebra on their own. If that distinction matters to you, if you've watched traditional classrooms drain curiosity out of capable kids and thought "there has to be a better way," keep reading.

Alpha is a private school that has torn up traditional instruction. Students learn academics through adaptive learning software at their own pace, progressing up to 2x faster than their peers. But software doesn't build grit. It doesn't teach a shy 7-year-old to stand up and speak in front of a room. That's your job. You'll spend half your day leading one-hour life skills workshops where you coach students through public speaking, collaboration, focus, and giving and receiving feedback. The other half is 1:1 and small-group motivation sessions where you build real relationships with students, set ambitious academic goals, and hold them accountable to hitting those goals every day.

This isn't a feel-good mentorship role. You'll track measurable outcomes: every student hitting their academic targets, passing mastery assessments for life skills, and rating you at 90% or above. The students who resist the most are the ones who need you the most, and turning a reluctant kid into one who genuinely wants to show up is the hardest and most rewarding part of this work.

People who consistently drive student outcomes here grow into leading and developing others, shaping how an entire campus coaches its students. If building something from the daily work up is more interesting to you than waiting for a title change, this is where that starts. Apply now.

What you will be doing

  • Leading one-hour life skills workshops for groups of K-8 students, coaching public speaking, collaboration, focus, and feedback through structured activities and storytelling
  • Running 1:1 and small-group motivation sessions where you set goals with students, track their progress in academic apps, and intervene when they fall behind
  • Adapting your delivery across a wide age range: the way you coach a kindergartner is nothing like how you push a 13-year-old
  • Administering Test2Pass assessments to confirm students have actually mastered the life skills you've taught
  • Using student profiles, progress data, and coachbot analytics to know exactly where each student stands before every session

What you will NOT be doing

  • Teaching academic content. Students learn math, reading, and science through adaptive software, not lectures.
  • Writing lesson plans from scratch. You'll work from an established life skills curriculum and playbook.
  • Grading papers, managing report cards, or prepping students for standardized tests. Student mastery is measured through assessments you administer, not paperwork.
  • Sitting behind a desk. This role is on your feet, in the room, face-to-face with students all day.

Key responsibilities

Drive a cohort of K-8 students to master life skills and hit ambitious academic goals.

Candidate requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in any subject
  • 3+ years of experience working directly with K-8 students
  • Track record of motivating or coaching K-8 students toward goals that went beyond baseline expectations, with at least one specific example you can walk through (the goal, what you did, the outcome)
  • Willing to work in-person in Austin, TX (relocation support provided)
  • Comfortable working in a non-traditional learning environment focused on motivation and engagement, not instruction
  • Legal right to work in the US without visa sponsorship

Nice to have

  • Experience coaching or mentoring in youth athletics, competitive academic programs, or structured enrichment camps
  • Background in behavioral motivation techniques like goal-setting frameworks, incentive systems, or accountability structures
  • Track record of reaching disengaged or resistant young students and turning them around
  • Experience facilitating group sessions for mixed-age audiences of children
