Camp Counselor   $100,000 USD/year

Description

  • On-site position at the Alpha School campus located in Brownsville, TX
  • $100,000 annual W2 salary, distributed weekly. Health benefits begin on day one.
  • Relocation assistance available for candidates committing to one full school year on campus

You've built your career coaching young people — not teaching at them. The distinction matters: coaching means connecting, challenging, and holding students accountable to their potential. Teaching means delivering curriculum. You've never been a curriculum delivery machine.

Alpha operates one of the most nontraditional schools in existence. Students don't sit in lecture halls absorbing information from the front of the room. Instead, they progress through AI-driven learning applications tailored to their individual pace. The AI manages academic instruction. Your responsibility is facilitating life skills workshops that capture the attention of K-8 students, leading motivation sessions that drive them toward weekly learning targets, and maintaining high standards when students try to dial it in. The academic side runs itself. You're here for the human element.

This position offers a meaningful growth trajectory, and that trajectory is tied to deeper student outcomes. Guides who reliably achieve their benchmarks (100% cohort completion of weekly app targets, satisfaction ratings above 90%) advance into Lead Guide positions where they mentor other educators and refine campus-wide coaching practices. Students remain the focus.

The campus sits in Brownsville, adjacent to SpaceX's Starbase facility. If your motivation for leaving your current role is rooted in mission — reshaping what a child believes they're capable of — rather than adding a line to your CV, submit your application.

What you will be doing

  • Facilitating one-hour life skills workshops for K-8 students on topics including public speaking, maintaining focus, and constructive feedback
  • Administering Test2Pass mastery assessments following each workshop to verify that students have internalized the skill, not simply attended the session
  • Conducting daily motivation sessions informed by student profiles, personal interests, and Coachbot analytics to ensure 100% of your cohort achieves their weekly app progression targets
  • Leveraging storytelling, incentive structures (including school currency and leaderboards), and one-on-one connection to overcome student reluctance
  • Monitoring cohort satisfaction metrics with a target of 90%+ on student feedback surveys

What you will NOT be doing

  • Lecturing from the front of the room. Academic progression happens through self-paced AI-powered applications, not through direct instruction from you.
  • Supervising idle screen time. While the environment involves students using computers, the role demands active facilitation and engagement.
  • Compromising standards when students resist. Test2Pass benchmarks remain firm, even during challenging weeks for individual students.
  • Building lesson plans from the ground up. Workshop materials and facilitation guides are provided; your role is to deliver them with the energy and narrative skill that ensures genuine student learning.
  • Handling parent communication, admissions processes, or campus-level logistics. Those functions belong to other teams.

Key responsibilities

Lead a cohort of K-8 students to achieve 100% completion of their weekly academic targets while facilitating life skills workshops that maintain 90%+ satisfaction ratings.

Candidate requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in any field
  • Minimum of 3 years working directly with K-8 (elementary and middle school) students
  • Strong storytelling ability and facilitation presence — capable of sustaining the attention of a room full of children for one hour
  • Willingness to work on-site at the Alpha campus in Brownsville, TX
  • Authorization to work in the United States without requiring visa sponsorship

Nice to have

  • Experience as a sports coach, camp counselor, or youth program leader
  • Demonstrated history of strong performance in competitive settings (academic, athletic, or professional)
  • Familiarity with self-directed or application-based learning models
