Teaching Aide   $30 USD/hour

Description

  • Location: Alpha Schools, Scottsdale (Phoenix), AZ — on-site role

  • Hours: Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM–4:00 PM (flexible scheduling within school hours)

If catching a distracted 10-year-old before they derail the entire class is the part of this work you excel at, read on. If you think "assistant" means observing from the sidelines and stepping in only during crises, this role isn't that.

Alpha operates a compressed K-12 instructional model: every minute accounted for, paced faster than traditional schooling, and centered on a Guide dedicated exclusively to teaching. This system functions only when someone takes ownership of the operational framework — ensuring on-time transitions, materials staged before instruction begins, and student focus sustained before small distractions escalate into interruptions.

You're in the thick of it from day one. No ramp-up time. You'll monitor the classroom, apply Alpha's motivational protocols (structured prompts, positive reinforcement, immediate redirection), and prepare each activity so the Guide begins teaching the moment they enter. When you perform effectively, a student losing focus is re-engaged before the lesson loses momentum. The standards are specific: 95% on-time transitions, materials ready ahead of every lesson, continuous student engagement.

As you gain fluency in Alpha's approach, your scope expands. Assistants who excel at the operational layer assume greater classroom ownership — and for the right candidate, the route to becoming a Guide is straightforward. Apply now.

What you will be doing

  • Managing student transitions between activities (approximately 30% of your time): tracking the schedule, cueing students to move, and using positive reinforcement to maintain orderly, punctual movement
  • Staging classroom materials ahead of each lesson by collecting supplies, organizing them according to the activity plan, and verifying setup aligns with the Guide's specifications before teaching starts
  • Supporting student engagement during structured activities (approximately 40% of your time) by observing participation, detecting early signs of disengagement, and redirecting students using Alpha's classroom management protocols without disrupting instruction

What you will NOT be doing

  • Observing from the back of the room until problems arise — this position demands active involvement and continuous decision-making throughout the school day
  • Creating lesson plans, drafting activity guides, or holding accountability for academic results (those are the Guide's domain)
  • Developing your own methods for managing student behavior; Alpha's motivational techniques are prescribed and you'll implement them uniformly
  • Handling facility maintenance, carpool coordination, or after-hours programming; your responsibilities are classroom operations during school hours

Key responsibilities

Maintain Alpha's classroom operations so Guides remain focused on delivering instruction.

Candidate requirements

  • Available to work on-site at our Scottsdale campus.
  • Commit to a minimum of 10 hours weekly, with complete flexibility to set your schedule during school hours (Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM). Full-time role available.
  • Prior experience working with children ages 5–14 in structured environments (school, camp, childcare, tutoring, or coaching).
  • Capacity to manage people, materials, and activities with speed and precision.
  • Comfortable with children and skilled at redirecting them through positive encouragement.
  • Authorized to work in the U.S. without requiring visa sponsorship.

Nice to have

  • Direct experience managing groups of children in active settings (camp counselor, classroom aide, teacher's aide, paraprofessional, youth sports coach, or after-school program coordinator)
  • Background in mastery-based, competency-based, or highly structured learning environments (Montessori, project-based learning, or comparable models)
  • Demonstrated ability to keep groups on schedule through positive redirection instead of escalating to adult intervention
