Teaching Aide   $30 USD/hour

Description

  • On-site: Alpha Schools, Scottsdale (Phoenix), AZ
  • $30/hr | 15–30 hrs/week | Full-time option at $60,000/year + benefits
  • Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–4:00 PM (flexible scheduling within school hours)

If you're the person who naturally notices when a 10-year-old is about to distract the whole class—and knows how to redirect them before that happens—this role may be the right fit. If you think "assistant" means observing from the sidelines and stepping in only when something breaks, this position isn't structured that way.

Alpha operates a compressed K-12 learning model: planned down to the minute, faster-paced than traditional schools, and designed around a Guide who remains fully focused on teaching. The model functions only when someone manages the operational foundation — ensuring transitions happen on time, materials are prepared before lessons begin, and student engagement is maintained before small distractions escalate.

You'll be involved from day one. There's no gradual onboarding. You'll be monitoring the classroom, applying Alpha-approved motivational strategies (positive reinforcement, structured prompts, real-time redirection), and preparing each activity so the Guide can begin instruction immediately upon arrival. When you perform this role effectively, a student who was losing focus returns to task before the lesson momentum is interrupted. The performance standards are specific: 95% of transitions completed on time, materials prepared before every lesson, consistent student engagement throughout.

As you gain fluency in Alpha's model, your responsibilities expand. Assistants who excel at the operational layer take on greater classroom ownership — and for candidates with the right aptitude, the path to Guide is straightforward. Apply now.

What you will be doing

  • Managing student transitions between activities (approximately 30% of your time): tracking time, prompting students to transition, and applying positive reinforcement to maintain orderly, on-schedule movement
  • Organizing classroom materials prior to each lesson by collecting supplies, arranging them according to the activity plan, and verifying the setup aligns with the Guide's instructions before teaching starts
  • Supporting student engagement during structured activities (approximately 40% of your time) by observing participation, catching disengagement early, and redirecting students with Alpha-approved classroom management methods without disrupting instruction

What you will NOT be doing

  • Waiting in the back of the room for problems to emerge — this position demands active involvement and continuous decision-making throughout the school day
  • Creating lesson plans, developing activity structures, or holding accountability for academic results (those belong to the Guide)
  • Improvising your own student behavior strategies; Alpha's motivational techniques are standardized and you'll implement them with consistency
  • Handling facility maintenance, carpool coordination, or evening events; your focus is classroom operations during school hours

Key responsibilities

Maintain Alpha's classroom operations so Guides can remain focused on teaching.

Candidate requirements

  • Willing to work on-site at our Scottsdale campus.
  • Available to work at least 10 hours per week, with complete flexibility to select your schedule during school hours (Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM). Full-time position available.
  • Experience working with children ages 5–14 in a structured environment (school, camp, childcare, tutoring, or coaching).
  • Ability to manage people, materials, and activities efficiently and effectively.
  • Comfortable with children and confident redirecting them using positive encouragement.
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. without visa sponsorship.

Nice to have

  • Direct group management experience with children in active settings (camp counselor, classroom aide, teacher's aide, paraprofessional, youth sports coach, or after-school program coordinator)
  • Background in a mastery-based, competency-based, or structured educational program (Montessori, project-based learning, or similar approaches)
  • Demonstrated ability to keep groups on schedule through positive redirection rather than relying on adult intervention
