Learning Coach

Description

  • $120,000 annual W2 salary paid weekly, with health, dental, and vision coverage starting day one
  • Full-time position (40 hours per week), based on-site at Alpha School's Kirkland, WA campus (temporary assignment at a different Alpha campus may occur before Kirkland opens)
  • Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate mandatory. No certificate means no interview.

You hold a WA teaching certificate already. The real question is whether you still want your days consumed by lectures, grading papers, and delivering standardized curriculum to every student the same way.

Your role here is not traditional teaching. You coach and motivate. The most meaningful support you can offer a student who reaches 99% of their weekly target is to insist it is not complete. If that feels uncomfortable, this role is not for you. If it excites you because maintaining high standards demonstrates your belief in what students can achieve, continue reading.

At Alpha, academic learning happens through AI-driven adaptive applications. No lectures. No textbooks. No lesson plans consuming your Sundays. Approximately 60% of your time is spent facilitating one-hour life-skills workshops covering public speaking, focus, and constructive feedback. About 30% involves working with students individually or in small groups, analyzing Coachbot data, and driving each student toward their weekly app progression goals. The remaining 10% is dedicated to reviewing data and translating it into actionable coaching strategies for the following week. You will not follow scripts; the most effective Guides modify existing workshops and create new ones when they identify unmet needs.

Excellence in this position is not defined by enjoyable sessions. It is defined by measurable progress. A semester is successful when at least 90% of your cohort demonstrates pre-to-post improvement on Test2Pass, at least 90% meet their weekly learning-app progression targets, and students rate their experience with you at 4 out of 5 or higher. Failing any of these three metrics means you have not met the role's expectations. As you demonstrate your ability to maintain high standards, advancement opportunities open to Lead Guide—where you coach newer Guides while continuing to manage a cohort—and eventually to Campus Lead.

If you prefer receiving a pre-packaged curriculum, or believe that warmth and rigorous expectations cannot coexist, this role is not a fit. If your WA certificate is current and you are motivated by coaching K-8 students to tangible outcomes rather than lecturing from textbooks, submit your application today.

What you will be doing

  • Facilitating one-hour life-skills workshops for K-8 cohorts covering public speaking, focus, and feedback skills, modifying the existing framework and creating new sessions when you identify gaps
  • Delivering Test2Pass pre- and post-assessments and coaching students who have not yet achieved mastery until they demonstrate it
  • Conducting daily individual and small-group coaching sessions that drive every student toward their weekly app progression goals, leveraging Coachbot analytics, Alpha's incentive structures (school currency, leaderboards), and your individual relationships to overcome resistance
  • Analyzing weekly performance metrics, identifying struggling students early, and implementing corrective interventions within the same week
  • Serving as the adult who maintains high expectations and the adult students trust and want to engage with; warmth creates the foundation for challenge, and challenge communicates your confidence in their potential

What you will NOT be doing

  • Delivering whiteboard lectures or creating daily lesson plans; academic content is delivered through the apps, not by you
  • Developing curriculum from the ground up; you bring an established framework to life through energy and narrative
  • Monitoring students passively as they work on computers or allowing them to disengage throughout the day; motivation in this role is proactive, personalized, and persistent
  • Reducing a weekly target or advancing a student without confirmed mastery to maintain progress or avoid difficult discussions
  • Grading assignments or handling parent communications

Key responsibilities

Coach a K-8 cohort toward measurable achievement of life skills and weekly learning-app progression objectives.

Candidate requirements

  • Current, valid Washington State Teaching Certificate (issued by WA OSPI) or capacity to obtain it promptly
  • Bachelor's degree in any field
  • Available to work full-time (40 hours per week) on-site at Alpha School's Kirkland, WA campus (with possible temporary placement at another Alpha campus before Kirkland opens)
  • Comfortable allowing AI to deliver instructional content while you concentrate on motivation and life-skills coaching
  • Authorization to work in the United States without requiring visa sponsorship

Nice to have

  • Background working with K-8 students in any setting (teaching, tutoring, sports, debate, theater, camps, or after-school programs)
  • History of high performance (academic, athletic, or professional), demonstrating that holding others to rigorous standards is intrinsic, not performative
  • Narrative ability and stage presence capable of engaging a room of 12-year-olds for an hour without needing to raise your voice
  • Demonstrated success converting disengaged or reluctant students into active learners
