Director of Family Relations   $200,000 USD/year

Description

  • On-site: Palo Alto, Piedmont, San Francisco, La Jolla (San Diego), or Los Angeles (South Bay), CA
  • $200,000/yr · Full-time salary
  • Benefits: Health, vision, dental, 401k, PTO, etc.

The families you serve already have access to services. What they lack is someone they trust implicitly.

This position exists at the heart of that trust relationship. You will be the individual families turn to when intuition signals concern, when clarity is needed, or when they wish to share something meaningful. Not as a function of duty—but because trust has been established through your actions. You will define the family experience at one of five Alpha campuses across California: Palo Alto, Piedmont, downtown San Francisco, La Jolla, or South Bay (Los Angeles).

Alpha is constructing a fundamentally different school. Core academic work is completed in two hours daily through AI-powered systems, with remaining time devoted to public speaking, critical thinking, and applied execution. No traditional lectures. No redundant assignments. Outcomes in the top 1% nationally. The families we serve are discerning, well-counseled, and frequently skeptical. They demand clarity of thought, not rehearsed messaging.

You will steward that dialogue over the long term. Not only during onboarding, but across multiple years. You will speak with authority on AI—its mechanics, its shortcomings, and its significance—particularly when engaging families who lead companies, fund startups, or demand rigor in every choice. If you lack the capacity for that caliber of discussion, this role will prove challenging. If you possess it, the position becomes among the most intellectually stimulating in the education sector.

This is not transactional relationship management. This is sustained trust-building with ultra-high-net-worth families who require discretion, discernment, and reliability. If that setting resonates with your experience—and you integrate AI into your daily workflow for thinking, communication, and productivity—the fit will be immediately apparent.

What you will be doing

  • Serve as the primary relationship steward for every family at your campus, cultivating trust that deepens over time
  • Identify and address concerns proactively with discretion, efficiency, and sound reasoning
  • Be visibly present during critical touchpoints: morning arrival, afternoon departure, and thoughtfully designed parent gatherings
  • Facilitate substantive, ongoing dialogue about Alpha's AI-based educational model with analytically rigorous, technology-literate families
  • Create and iterate on community-building experiences that foster belonging, support, and organic advocacy

What you will NOT be doing

  • Overseeing admissions pipelines or enrollment metrics—your remit begins once families have enrolled
  • Operating primarily from behind a desk or via email—this demands consistent physical presence
  • Reciting prepared answers or avoiding substantive questions regarding AI or educational philosophy
  • Depending on established procedures—you will create frameworks in areas where none currently exist
  • Viewing families as portfolio accounts—this position values discernment over task execution

Key responsibilities

Develop and maintain profound trust with ultra-high-net-worth families, driving sustained retention, advocacy, and confidence in Alpha's AI-driven educational approach.

Candidate requirements

  • Based in or able to commute daily to Palo Alto, Piedmont, San Francisco, La Jolla, or Los Angeles
  • 5+ years working directly with UHNW individuals or families in private schools, private equity, family offices, or elite client service environments
  • Proven ability to navigate complex, high-stakes relationships with discretion and sound judgment
  • Active, daily user of AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity) with the ability to clearly explain AI capabilities, risks, and limitations
  • Strong presence and communication style that earns credibility with highly educated, high-expectation families
  • Familiarity with private or independent school ecosystems, either professionally or personally
  • Availability for early mornings, late afternoons, and select evening or weekend events

Nice to have

  • Established connections within local private school or UHNW networks
  • Background working with founders, investors, or technology executives
  • Demonstrated success building communities or experiences that generate organic referrals
  • Experience navigating early-stage or high-growth settings with significant ambiguity
  • Capacity to distill complex technical material into clear, authoritative dialogue
