Academic Coach   $100,000 USD/year

Description

  • Austin, TX: on-site position with relocation assistance available
  • $100,000 annually, W2 compensation paid weekly
  • Full-time role: daily direct engagement with K-8 students

The most transformative thing you can offer a student isn't teaching them algebra. It's persuading them they're capable of mastering algebra independently. If that difference resonates with you, if you've observed traditional classrooms sap curiosity from capable children and thought "a better approach must exist," continue reading.

Alpha is a private school that has dismantled conventional instruction. Students advance through academics via adaptive learning software at their own speed, progressing up to 2x faster than their counterparts. Software alone doesn't cultivate grit. It doesn't train a reserved 7-year-old to stand and present before an audience. That's where you come in. You'll dedicate half your day to facilitating one-hour life skills workshops where you guide students through public speaking, collaboration, focus, and exchanging feedback. The remaining half involves 1:1 and small-group motivation sessions where you forge genuine relationships with students, establish ambitious academic objectives, and hold them accountable for meeting those objectives daily.

This role is not a casual mentorship position. You'll monitor concrete outcomes: every student reaching their academic benchmarks, completing mastery assessments for life skills, and rating your effectiveness at 90% or higher. The students who push back hardest are often those who need your support most, and transforming a reluctant child into one who genuinely wants to participate represents the most challenging and fulfilling aspect of this work.

Individuals who consistently deliver student outcomes in this role advance to leading and developing others, influencing how an entire campus approaches student coaching. If building something from foundational daily work appeals more to you than waiting for a title promotion, this opportunity is your starting point. Apply now.

What you will be doing

  • Facilitating one-hour life skills workshops for K-8 student groups, guiding public speaking, collaboration, focus, and feedback through structured activities and storytelling
  • Conducting 1:1 and small-group motivation sessions where you establish goals with students, monitor their advancement in academic apps, and step in when they fall behind
  • Adjusting your approach across a broad age spectrum: coaching a kindergartner requires an entirely different strategy than challenging a 13-year-old
  • Delivering Test2Pass assessments to verify students have genuinely mastered the life skills you've coached
  • Leveraging student profiles, progress metrics, and coachbot analytics to understand precisely where each student stands prior to every session

What you will NOT be doing

  • Delivering academic instruction. Students acquire math, reading, and science knowledge through adaptive software, not traditional lectures.
  • Creating lesson plans from the ground up. You'll operate from an established life skills curriculum and structured playbook.
  • Grading assignments, managing report cards, or preparing students for standardized testing. Student mastery is evaluated through assessments you deliver, not administrative paperwork.
  • Working from behind a desk. This position requires being on your feet, present in the room, engaging face-to-face with students throughout the day.

Key responsibilities

Guide a cohort of K-8 students to achieve mastery in life skills and reach ambitious academic objectives.

Candidate requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in any field
  • 3+ years of direct experience working with K-8 students
  • Demonstrated history of motivating or coaching K-8 students toward goals exceeding baseline expectations, with at least one concrete example you can articulate (the objective, your actions, the result)
  • Willingness to work on-site in Austin, TX (relocation assistance provided)
  • Comfort operating in a non-traditional learning environment centered on motivation and engagement rather than instruction
  • Legal authorization to work in the US without requiring visa sponsorship

Nice to have

  • Experience coaching or mentoring through youth athletics, competitive academic programs, or structured enrichment camps
  • Familiarity with behavioral motivation techniques such as goal-setting frameworks, incentive systems, or accountability structures
  • Proven ability to connect with disengaged or resistant young students and facilitate their turnaround
  • Experience leading group sessions for mixed-age child audiences
