Director of Development   $400,000 USD/year

Description

Families at Alpha Miami surround themselves with trusted advisors—financial, legal, personal—but there's been a gap in their network. You'll fill it.

You will be the person they reach out to when something doesn't sit right, when uncertainty creeps in, or when they experience a milestone they know you'll appreciate. You'll develop an understanding of each family deep enough to sense their needs before articulation—and you'll possess the judgment and composure to address whatever arises with discretion, warmth, and apparent ease. Over time, your role will extend beyond school affiliation. You'll become woven into how they navigate this period of their family's journey.

The private school landscape in Miami is tightly knit, interconnected, and intolerant of errors. What happens at Alpha doesn't remain confined—it circulates through influential networks: residential buildings, private clubs, yachts, charity events, and WhatsApp threads that guide where families enroll next. You'll grasp this reality intuitively, having built your career in environments where reputation is the sole currency and one mistake echoes longer than any success. You'll cultivate a community that families want to protect, where inclusion feels natural and referrals emerge because the experience warrants them.

Miami is inherently global. Your work will involve Latin American families, international executives, finance and technology professionals who recently relocated to Miami, and globally mobile households whose educational philosophy—and institutional expectations—stem from experiences well beyond American independent schools. Many navigate between Miami, São Paulo, Bogotá, Madrid, and New York as fluidly as others commute locally, and they will evaluate Alpha against alternatives worldwide. The ideal candidate will be equally adept at managing cross-cultural family dynamics—and the expectation of seamless, sophisticated relationships—as navigating the established Miami private school ecosystem.

Alpha diverges from conventional schooling. Students complete core academics in two hours daily through AI-powered applications, then dedicate remaining time to public speaking, critical thinking, and applied projects. No traditional lectures. No unnecessary assignments. Performance in the top 1% nationally.

The families who select Alpha have made a deliberate choice—and in a city where educational decisions signal status and everyone holds an opinion, they will face constant scrutiny. You'll ensure they never hesitate when responding. If sustaining that conviction through years of sophisticated, internationally informed skepticism feels burdensome, this position isn't suitable. If it represents the most compelling dialogue you could engage in, continue reading.

What you will be doing

  • Shape the cultural fabric of the school community—its tone, rituals, and implicit standards that create belonging—so Alpha becomes a place families take pride in, not merely a school they selected
  • Manage the full parent relationship lifecycle—from initial inquiry through enrollment, ongoing retention, and sustained advocacy—ensuring faculty remain student-focused while families maintain a trusted contact
  • Detect early signs of concern and address them with the discretion and judgment that preserves trust—including the more difficult assessment of when a family may not align
  • Maintain visibility where families gather: morning arrival, afternoon departure, evening gatherings, and the spontaneous exchanges that carry the most weight
  • Develop a community that both domestic and international families defend—and where referrals occur because the experience justifies them
  • Communicate Alpha's narrative persuasively—in individual discussions, at events, and within the discerning, globally oriented circles where the school's reputation is truly established

What you will NOT be doing

  • Operating from behind a desk—your community presence defines the role
  • Adhering to standard 9–5 schedules—early mornings, late afternoons, and evening commitments are integral, not occasional
  • Escalating challenging parent discussions to faculty or administrators—you retain full ownership
  • Depending on administrative infrastructure, formalized procedures, or complete staffing—you function with substantial autonomy and create what's necessary
  • Approaching family relationships as transactional accounts—this role rewards authentic connection, not procedural adherence

Key responsibilities

Serve as the primary trusted relationship anchoring every family's experience at Alpha's Miami campus, and the architect of its community culture. Maintain their confidence during challenging moments, establish the traditions and tone that make belonging meaningful, and foster the environment where satisfied families become active advocates within the networks that influence Miami's private education landscape.

Candidate requirements

  • 5+ years establishing and maintaining trust with high-net-worth or ultra-high-net-worth families in a high-touch, relationship-centered capacity
  • Demonstrated success guiding sophisticated clients through consequential decisions—with measurable outcomes you can reference: conversions, retention rates, referral generation
  • The discretion and poise to navigate sensitive, confidential matters without visible impact
  • Proven experience managing and developing personnel—coaching, maintaining high standards, and executing difficult staffing decisions—beyond relationship or account management
  • Innate cross-cultural fluency spanning globally mobile and established Miami family populations
  • AI-native orientation—you employ AI tools with proficiency, understand their potential and limitations, and actively introduce superior solutions, even without building them directly
  • Miami-based, available for full-time on-site presence, and adaptable to variable hours
  • Authorized to work in the United States without requiring sponsorship

Nice to have

  • Background as a head of school, principal, superintendent, or equivalent educational leadership position
  • Professional proficiency in Spanish or Portuguese
  • Personal or professional exposure to independent or alternative education models
  • Established connections within Miami's private school parent communities
  • Experience working with internationally mobile, Latin American, or globally networked families
  • A personal network extending through the neighborhoods, clubs, and institutions where Alpha's families reside and make decisions
