Engineering Lead   $200,000 USD/year

Description

We are seeking Technical Team Leads to ensure quality and timely delivery across our application-level products. In this role, you will guide a compact team of 3-5 engineers who are building educational applications that serve thousands of students.

Potential products in your portfolio:

  • Athena: AI-generated video content and assessments that produce measurable learning outcomes
  • TeachTap: AI-powered platform bringing historical figures into TikTok-style educational experiences
  • TeachTales: Personalized storytelling designed to enhance reading comprehension
  • TrashCat: Game-based learning platform that makes education engaging and enjoyable

This position combines individual contribution with leadership: you will spend approximately 50% of your time hands-on developing challenging features, and 50% mentoring and supporting your team. Your role includes defining quality expectations, creating reusable patterns, conducting code reviews with educational intent, and fostering engineer development. Team success is your responsibility, extending beyond your individual contributions.

Expect a lean team structure with substantial ownership and minimal administrative overhead. Technical leadership is your domain; people management is handled separately.

What you will be doing

  • Developing challenging features that serve as reference implementations for the team
  • Conducting pull request reviews with comprehensive, instructional commentary
  • Mentoring engineers through pair programming sessions and constructive feedback
  • Orchestrating technical workflows and decomposing project requirements
  • Defining quality benchmarks and ensuring team adherence

What you will NOT be doing

  • Handling people management responsibilities (recruitment, termination, performance evaluations, career development discussions)
  • Contributing to platform or infrastructure layer projects
  • Spending excessive time in meetings
  • Designing architecture in isolation without hands-on implementation

Candidate requirements

  • At least 5 years of full-stack development experience
  • At least 2 years in a lead role (reviewing others' work, mentoring engineers, establishing team practices)
  • Track record of shipping SaaS products
  • Experience with AI tools in development workflow
  • Demonstrated ability to help other engineers improve and grow
