Description

We are seeking Technical Team Leads to own quality and execution across our application-layer products. In this role, you will guide a small engineering team of 3-5 developers working on educational applications that serve thousands of students.

Example products in your scope:

  • Athena: AI-powered video and assessment tools that produce measurable learning gains
  • TeachTap: An AI-driven platform bringing history's figures to life through TikTok-style educational content
  • TeachTales: Customized, immersive storytelling experiences designed to enhance reading comprehension
  • TrashCat: Game-based learning that makes education both fun and effective

This position is structured as a player-coach model: you will spend 50% of your time building sophisticated features yourself and 50% mentoring and empowering your team. Your responsibilities include defining quality expectations, creating repeatable patterns, conducting instructive code reviews, and fostering engineer development. You own team results, not simply individual contributions.

Small teams, significant ownership, zero red tape. You provide technical leadership while people management is handled separately.

What you will be doing

  • Developing sophisticated features that establish technical patterns for the team
  • Conducting PR reviews with comprehensive, instructional commentary
  • Mentoring engineers using pairing sessions and constructive feedback
  • Organizing technical initiatives and decomposing feature requirements
  • Defining quality benchmarks and ensuring consistent team adherence

What you will NOT be doing

  • Handling people management duties (recruitment, termination, performance evaluations, career development discussions)
  • Building platform or infrastructure-level systems
  • Spending time in prolonged or unnecessary meetings
  • Designing architecture without direct implementation involvement

Candidate requirements

  • Minimum 5 years of full-stack development experience
  • Minimum 2 years serving in a lead capacity (conducting code reviews, mentoring developers, defining team standards)
  • Proven history of delivering SaaS products to market
  • Hands-on experience integrating AI tools into development processes
  • Confirmed ability to elevate the skills and performance of fellow engineers
