Description

We are seeking Technical Team Leads to own quality and delivery across our application-layer products. In this role, you will guide a compact team of 3-5 engineers developing educational applications serving thousands of students.

Potential products include:

  • Athena: AI-driven videos and assessments producing quantifiable learning results
  • TeachTap: AI-powered platform bringing historical personalities to life through a TikTok-style educational interface
  • TeachTales: Customized, engaging storytelling designed to enhance reading comprehension
  • TrashCat: Game-based learning that makes education enjoyable and interactive

This is a hybrid player-coach position: approximately 50% dedicated to hands-on development of sophisticated features, and 50% focused on mentoring and empowering your team. You will define quality expectations, create technical patterns, conduct code reviews with an instructional approach, and facilitate engineer development. You own the team's results, not solely your individual contributions.

Lean team structure, substantial ownership, minimal overhead. Your focus is technical leadership; people management is handled separately.

What you will be doing

  • Developing sophisticated features that establish technical direction for your team
  • Conducting pull request reviews with thorough, instructional commentary
  • Mentoring engineers via pair programming and constructive feedback
  • Organizing technical efforts and decomposing product requirements
  • Defining quality benchmarks and ensuring adherence across the team

What you will NOT be doing

  • Handling personnel matters (recruiting, terminations, performance evaluations, career development discussions)
  • Developing platform or infrastructure-layer systems
  • Attending continuous meetings
  • Designing architecture in isolation without building

Candidate requirements

  • Minimum 5 years of full-stack development experience
  • Minimum 2 years in a leadership capacity (conducting code reviews, mentoring developers, defining team standards)
  • Proven history of delivering SaaS products
  • Practical experience incorporating AI tools into development processes
  • Verifiable success in advancing other engineers' skills and capabilities
