Lead Software Engineer   $200,000 USD/year

Description

We are seeking Technical Team Leads to ensure quality and timely delivery across our application-level products. In this role, you will guide a compact team of 3-5 engineers who are developing educational applications serving thousands of students.

Potential products include:

  • Athena: AI-powered video and assessment generation that produces measurable learning results
  • TeachTap: An AI-driven platform that animates historical personalities within a TikTok-inspired educational interface
  • TeachTales: Customized storytelling experiences designed to enhance reading comprehension
  • TrashCat: Game-based learning that transforms education into an enjoyable, interactive experience

This position combines hands-on development with leadership: approximately 50% of your time will involve personally implementing sophisticated features, while the remaining 50% focuses on mentoring and empowering your team members. You will define quality expectations, create reusable patterns, conduct code reviews with instructive commentary, and foster engineer development. Accountability extends to the entire team's results, not solely your individual contributions.

Expect a lean team structure, substantial ownership, and minimal organizational overhead. Your focus is technical leadership; people management responsibilities reside elsewhere.

What you will be doing

  • Implementing sophisticated features that establish architectural patterns for the team
  • Conducting pull request reviews with comprehensive, instructional commentary
  • Mentoring engineers through pair programming sessions and constructive feedback
  • Organizing technical initiatives and decomposing project requirements
  • Defining quality benchmarks and verifying team adherence

What you will NOT be doing

  • Handling personnel matters (recruitment, termination, performance evaluations, career development discussions)
  • Developing platform-level infrastructure components
  • Participating in excessive meeting schedules
  • Designing architecture in isolation without hands-on implementation

Candidate requirements

  • A minimum of 5 years of full-stack development experience
  • A minimum of 2 years in a leadership capacity (conducting code reviews, mentoring engineers, defining team practices)
  • Proven history of delivering SaaS products
  • Proficiency using AI tools within development workflows
  • Confirmed capability to facilitate growth and improvement in fellow engineers
