Description
We are seeking Platform Architects to establish the foundational infrastructure upon which other teams develop. Your responsibilities will center on platform-level products where architectural patterns, API design choices, and technical documentation directly influence how multiple development teams operate.
Potential product assignments include:
- TimeBack: An educational platform that enables Alpha School's 2-hour learning methodology (achieving 99th percentile test outcomes)
- Incept: A content generation platform delivering personalized educational materials across multiple learning systems
- Crossover: An AI-driven hiring platform that evaluates tens of thousands of candidates each month
- This position emphasizes design: 50% producing specifications, API contracts, and architectural decisions; 30% building sophisticated platform capabilities; 20% conducting reviews and providing technical guidance. You hold architectural authority over technical decisions. Once team alignment is achieved, your specifications become binding.
You will operate within a compact team of accomplished engineers, with substantial ownership and minimal bureaucratic overhead. Design, implementation, and ownership all rest with you.
What you will be doing
- Producing technical specifications prior to development
- Creating APIs that support backward compatibility and future extensibility
- Recording Important Technical Decisions (ITDs) complete with supporting rationale
- Implementing sophisticated platform functionality
- Evaluating pull requests to ensure architectural alignment
What you will NOT be doing
- Extensive team leadership or personnel management duties
- Development of straightforward application-level products
- Prolonged meeting schedules
- Theoretical architecture work disconnected from implementation
Candidate requirements
- A minimum of 5 years in professional software development
- At least 2 years spent designing systems where your APIs were consumed by other teams or your architectural choices influenced dependent projects
- Demonstrated history of authoring technical specifications or technical decisions that guided implementation by others
- Practical experience integrating AI tools into your development process
