Description

We are seeking Platform Architects to establish the foundational systems on which other teams rely. In this role, you will focus on platform-level products where your architectural patterns, API design choices, and documentation influence the development approach of multiple teams.

Potential product areas include:

  • TimeBack: Educational platform that supports Alpha School's 2-hour learning model (99th percentile test results)
  • Incept: Content generation platform that produces personalized educational content for various learning applications
  • Crossover: AI-powered hiring platform managing tens of thousands of applicants each month
  • This role emphasizes design: 50% creating specifications, API contracts, and technical decisions; 30% building complex platform features; 20% reviewing and guiding team members. You hold technical authority over architectural choices. Once alignment is reached with the team, your specifications become mandatory.

You will work with a small team of skilled peers, enjoy high ownership, and face no bureaucracy. You design it, you build it, you own it.

What you will be doing

  • Creating specifications prior to implementation
  • Architecting APIs for backward compatibility and extensibility
  • Producing Important Technical Decision (ITD) documents with supporting rationale
  • Implementing complex platform features
  • Conducting PR reviews to ensure architectural consistency

What you will NOT be doing

  • Extensive team leadership or people management responsibilities
  • Development of simple app-level products
  • Participation in endless meetings
  • Pure architectural work without hands-on implementation

Candidate requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years of professional software development experience
  • At least 2 years of experience designing systems where other teams consumed your APIs or relied on your architectural decisions
  • Demonstrated history of authoring technical specifications or technical decisions that were implemented by others
  • Practical experience using AI tools in your development workflow
