Description
We are seeking Platform Architects to establish the technical foundations upon which other teams deliver. In this role, you will focus on platform-level products where your API design, architectural decisions, and technical documentation directly influence how multiple teams build and scale.
Potential products include:
- TimeBack: Educational platform supporting Alpha School's 2-hour learning model (99th percentile test results)
- Incept: Content generation platform producing personalized educational content across multiple learning applications
- Crossover: AI-powered hiring platform handling tens of thousands of applicants each month
- This is a design-centric position: 50% drafting specifications, API contracts, and technical decisions; 30% developing complex platform capabilities; 20% reviewing work and providing architectural guidance. You hold technical authority over architectural choices. Once aligned with the team, your specifications become binding.
Lean team of accomplished engineers, significant ownership, minimal bureaucracy. You architect it, you implement it, you maintain it.
What you will be doing
- Drafting specifications prior to development
- Architecting APIs that ensure backward compatibility and extensibility
- Recording Important Technical Decisions (ITDs) with supporting rationale
- Implementing complex platform capabilities
- Conducting PR reviews to enforce architectural consistency
What you will NOT be doing
- Extensive team leadership or people management duties
- Development on straightforward app-level products
- Attending continuous meetings
- Pure architectural work without hands-on implementation
Candidate requirements
- Minimum 5 years of professional software development experience
- Minimum 2 years architecting systems where other teams relied on your APIs or architectural decisions
- Demonstrated history of producing technical specifications or technical decisions that were executed by others
- Proficiency with AI tools integrated into development workflows
