Description
We are seeking Platform Architects to establish the architectural foundations upon which other engineering teams build. In this role, you will focus on platform-level products where your API design choices, architectural frameworks, and technical documentation directly influence how multiple teams approach development.
Platform products you may contribute to:
- TimeBack: Educational platform that enables Alpha School's 2-hour learning model (99th percentile test results)
- Incept: Content generation platform that produces personalized educational content for various learning applications
- Crossover: AI-powered hiring platform that processes tens of thousands of applicants monthly
- This role is design-intensive: 50% authoring specifications, API contracts, and technical decisions; 30% building complex platform features; 20% conducting reviews and providing guidance. You hold technical authority over architectural choices. Once aligned with the team, your specifications become mandatory.
You will work with a small team of highly capable engineers, exercise significant ownership, and operate without bureaucracy. You design it, you implement it, you own it.
What you will be doing
- Authoring specifications prior to implementation
- Creating APIs that ensure backward compatibility and extensibility
- Producing Important Technical Decisions (ITDs) with clear rationale
- Implementing complex platform features
- Conducting PR reviews to ensure architectural consistency
What you will NOT be doing
- Extensive team leadership or people management responsibilities
- Development on straightforward app-level products
- Participating in prolonged meetings
- Architecture work without hands-on implementation
Candidate requirements
- At least 5 years of professional software development experience
- At least 2 years designing systems where other teams consumed your APIs or depended on your architectural decisions
- Track record of writing technical specs or technical decisions that others implemented
- Experience with AI tools in development workflow
