Description
We are seeking Platform Architects to establish the foundational architecture upon which other teams develop. In this role, you will focus on platform-level products where your API designs, structural patterns, and technical documentation directly influence how multiple engineering teams build and deliver.
Platform products in scope:
- TimeBack: Educational platform that enables Alpha School's 2-hour learning model (99th percentile test results)
- Incept: Content generation platform producing personalized educational materials for various learning applications
- Crossover: AI-powered hiring platform that processes tens of thousands of applicants monthly
- This is a design-centric position: 50% authoring specifications, API contracts, and architectural decisions; 30% building complex platform capabilities; 20% conducting reviews and providing technical guidance. You hold technical authority over architecture. Once aligned with the team, your specifications become binding.
Lean team of accomplished engineers, substantial ownership, minimal process overhead. You architect it, you implement it, you maintain it.
What you will be doing
- Authoring technical specifications prior to development
- Crafting APIs that support backward compatibility and future extensibility
- Recording Important Technical Decisions (ITDs) with supporting justification
- Implementing sophisticated platform capabilities
- Conducting pull request reviews to ensure architectural alignment
What you will NOT be doing
- Extensive team leadership or personnel management
- Development of straightforward application-layer products
- Participating in prolonged meeting cycles
- Theoretical architecture work disconnected from implementation
Candidate requirements
- Minimum 5 years of professional software development experience
- Minimum 2 years designing systems where other teams relied on your APIs or architectural decisions
- Demonstrated history of producing technical specifications or architectural decisions that guided implementation by others
- Practical experience integrating AI tools into development workflows
