Description
We are seeking Platform Architects to establish the structural foundations upon which other engineering teams will develop. Your work will focus on platform-grade products where the architectural patterns, API designs, and technical documentation you create will directly influence development practices across multiple teams.

- TimeBack: Educational platform that underpins Alpha School's 2-hour learning model (achieving 99th percentile test outcomes)
- Incept: Content generation platform producing personalized educational material for various learning applications
- Crossover: AI-driven hiring platform that processes tens of thousands of candidate applications each month
- This role emphasizes design: 50% of your time dedicated to authoring specifications, API contracts, and architectural decisions; 30% to implementing sophisticated platform capabilities; 20% to code review and providing technical guidance. You hold technical authority over architectural choices. Once team alignment is reached, your specifications become binding.
Lean team of capable engineers, significant ownership, minimal bureaucracy. You architect it, implement it, and maintain responsibility for it.
What you will be doing
- Authoring technical specifications prior to any implementation work
- Designing APIs that prioritize backward compatibility and future extensibility
- Documenting Important Technical Decisions (ITDs) along with supporting rationale
- Implementing sophisticated platform-level features
- Conducting PR reviews to ensure architectural alignment
What you will NOT be doing
- Extensive team leadership or direct people management
- Development of straightforward application-level products
- Participation in prolonged or excessive meetings
- Pure architectural work detached from hands-on implementation
Candidate requirements
- At least 5 years of professional software development experience
- At least 2 years designing systems where other teams consumed your APIs or depended on your architectural decisions
- Track record of writing technical specs or technical decisions that others implemented
- Experience with AI tools in development workflow
