Performance Coach   $150,000 USD/year

Description

You believe that refusing to lower standards is the most generous thing you can offer a student. You've reached a level of achievement in a competitive domain that most people only observe from a distance: elite-level athletics, graduation with honors from a top university, acceptance into a highly selective organization, or a company you launched and grew yourself. Now imagine channeling that drive into a classroom of K-12 students who have never encountered someone with your track record—someone willing to push them toward standards they never imagined meeting. If the idea of holding young people to elite benchmarks feels unreasonable, this isn't the right fit.

Alpha leverages AI to deliver personalized 1-on-1 academics, allowing students to complete core subjects in roughly two hours per day. The remaining hours are dedicated to life skills, self-directed projects, and meaningful development. At Alpha's most rigorous campuses, students require more than oversight. They need a credible mentor whose personal accomplishments set the example: someone capable of reading the environment, establishing expectations, and guiding them through resistance, distraction, and uncertainty.

You won't be teaching. AI manages the academic instruction. Your responsibility is to motivate, coach, and apply the same unrelenting standards you've applied to yourself. Forty percent of your time is spent in direct 1-on-1 and small-group sessions that identify obstacles and establish ambitious targets. Another forty percent involves facilitating structured life-skills workshops designed for mastery rather than engagement. The final twenty percent is dedicated to morning sessions that set a daily tone where average performance is unacceptable.

The trajectory here emphasizes depth over advancement. You begin by mastering Alpha's methodology and earning student trust. Within a few months, you become the person they allow to challenge them beyond their perceived limits. The reward is not a title change. It's continuity: the same students, year over year, maturing with your support. It's observing a student who avoided eye contact in September deliver a confident presentation to adults in May.

This position remains student-centered. Students are the purpose, not a pathway to something else. If you're motivated to leave your current role because of mission alignment rather than résumé building, submit your application now.

What you will be doing

  • Conducting 1-on-1 and small-group coaching sessions using Coachbot analytics and student data to identify barriers, establish ambitious targets, and ensure accountability for execution
  • Facilitating structured life-skills workshops designed for mastery, drawing on credible examples from your own high-level experience, and evaluating mastery through Alpha's Test2Pass framework
  • Establishing the daily cultural standard each morning through focused sessions that reinforce high-performance expectations campus-wide
  • Monitoring student progress continuously and refining coaching approaches based on data rather than intuition
  • Developing trusted mentor relationships with students and their families by maintaining high expectations, consistency, and documented motivation strategies

What you will NOT be doing

  • Delivering lessons, creating curriculum, or evaluating assignments — Alpha's AI-driven academic platform manages instruction; you manage motivation
  • Addressing a traditional classroom of 30 students (your work centers on high-touch coaching in intimate settings, not large-group teaching)
  • Supervising other personnel or advancing through an administrative track (this role prioritizes direct student impact over organizational structure)
  • Attending faculty meetings or working through institutional bureaucracy (your focus remains on students)
  • Compromising standards to meet performance targets (if a student achieves 99%, your role is to understand what prevented 100%)

Key responsibilities

Drive outstanding student motivation, development, and life-skill mastery at Alpha's most demanding campuses.

Candidate requirements

  • Bachelor's degree
  • At least one instance of exceptional achievement in a highly selective, globally recognized domain (examples: national or international competition medals, top-tier university with distinction, highly selective firm or fellowship, elite performing arts institution, or founding and scaling a successful venture)
  • At least 3 years of experience in student coaching, youth mentoring, athletic coaching, or leadership roles where you measurably raised others' performance
  • Willing to work in-person at an Alpha campus in Santa Barbara, CA; Santa Monica, CA; San Francisco, CA; Greenwich, CT; Boston, MA; New York City, NY; or Seattle, WA (relocation support provided)
  • Legal right to work in the United States

Nice to have

  • Background in elite competitive athletics (varsity D1, national team, or professional level) with experience coaching or mentoring younger athletes
  • Experience in high-accountability environments like management consulting, investment banking, or military leadership
  • Track record of youth development through mentoring in non-academic settings (community organizations, after-school programs, sports camps)
  • Comfort presenting to and building trust with high-expectation families paying premium private school tuition
