Camp Counselor   $100,000 USD/year

Description

  • $100,000 annual W2 salary with weekly pay; health, dental, and vision benefits begin on day one
  • On-site position at an Alpha K-8 school in Scottsdale (Phoenix), AZ; Oklahoma City, OK; Tulsa, OK; Nashville, TN; Austin, TX; Brownsville, TX; Fort Worth, TX; Houston (Central, South, or The Woodlands), TX; Park City, UT (Salt Lake City metro) - relocation assistance available

Your role is not to teach. Your role is to motivate.

The most meaningful support you can offer a student who reached 99% of their target is to refuse to accept it as finished. If that expectation unsettles you, this may not be the right fit. If it energizes you—because maintaining high expectations is how you demonstrate belief in a student's potential—then read on.

At Alpha, academic learning happens through AI-driven applications. There are no lectures. No traditional textbooks. Half of your day is spent facilitating one-hour workshops on life skills such as public speaking, concentration, and constructive feedback. The other half involves working with students individually or in small groups, analyzing their progress via Coachbot data, and driving each one toward 100% completion of their weekly app objectives. You will not follow a rigid script—workshop frameworks are provided, but top performers customize them and create new sessions when they identify unmet needs.

Success in a quarter means every student in your group completes their weekly app targets, passes the Test2Pass assessment for all life-skills workshops, and at least 90% report positive engagement with you. Falling short on any of these three measures means the role's objectives have not been met. During your first year, you'll internalize the operating model; as you demonstrate your ability to uphold standards, opportunities open to advance to Lead Guide, where you mentor newer team members while continuing direct student work.

If you prefer conventional teaching, expect curriculum to be fully scripted, or see warmth and rigor as incompatible, this position will not suit you. If your background includes athletic coaching, camp counseling, tutoring where you refused to let students give up, or performance work that allowed you to engage a room of young children, the final interview stage is a full day on-site working with actual Alpha students. If that prospect excites you most, submit your application now.

What you will be doing

  • Facilitating one-hour workshops for K-8 groups focused on life skills including public speaking, focus, feedback, and other foundational competencies, customizing content and creating new sessions when you identify missing elements
  • Conducting daily individual and small-group coaching sessions that drive every student to complete 100% of their weekly app objectives, leveraging Coachbot analytics, Alpha's motivational systems (school currency, leaderboards), and your rapport with each child to overcome resistance
  • Administering Test2Pass—Alpha's mastery assessment—for each life skill, then coaching students who do not pass until they achieve mastery
  • Adjusting your approach across a broad developmental range, from kindergarteners requiring high energy and physical activity to eighth graders needing direct communication and accountability
  • Serving as the adult who maintains high expectations and the adult students trust and want to engage with; warmth creates the foundation for challenge, and challenge signals your confidence in their capacity

What you will NOT be doing

  • Delivering content at a whiteboard; academic instruction is embedded in the applications, not delivered by you
  • Creating curriculum materials from the ground up; you animate an established framework through energy and narrative
  • Monitoring students passively while they use computers; motivation in this environment is active, individualized, and persistent
  • Reducing a weekly target to make it easier for a student to reach; when a student is behind, the solution is increased effort, not lowered expectations
  • Grading assignments, preparing for standardized tests, or handling parent communications; Campus Leads manage family-facing responsibilities, and the other tasks do not exist in this model

Key responsibilities

Ensure that every student in your K-8 cohort completes their weekly learning objectives, achieves mastery in each life skill, and finishes the year expressing strong positive regard for you.

Candidate requirements

  • Able to work on-site at an Alpha campus in Scottsdale (Phoenix), AZ; Oklahoma City, OK; Tulsa, OK; Nashville, TN; Austin, TX; Brownsville, TX; Fort Worth, TX; Houston, TX (Central, South, or The Woodlands); Park City, UT - relocation assistance provided
  • Bachelor's degree in any discipline
  • Minimum of 3 years working directly with K-8 students (in teaching, coaching, tutoring, camp environments, or youth program leadership roles)
  • A concrete example you can articulate of helping a K-8 student reach a challenging goal: the objective, your actions, and the result
  • Comfort with AI managing instructional delivery while you concentrate on motivation and life-skills development
  • Regular use of generative AI platforms (such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude)
  • Authorization to work in the United States without requiring visa sponsorship (or in Canada for the Toronto location)

Nice to have

  • Background in youth sports coaching, debate programs, camp leadership, theater, or extracurricular initiatives where you held direct responsibility for motivating children toward defined objectives
  • Demonstrated personal achievement record (academic, athletic, or professional) such that maintaining high standards for others reflects a consistent approach, not an adopted stance
  • Communication and presentation skills capable of engaging a room of 12-year-olds for an hour without needing to raise your voice
  • Proven ability to convert disengaged or reluctant students into engaged, active learners
