Camp Counselor   $100,000 USD/year

Description

  • $100,000 annual W2 compensation, distributed weekly; full health, dental, and vision coverage begins day one
  • On-site role at an Alpha K-8 school in Denver, CO; Atlanta, GA; Oklahoma City, OK; Tulsa, OK; Nashville, TN; Austin, TX; Brownsville, TX; Fort Worth, TX; Houston, TX (Central, South, or The Woodlands); Park City, UT (Salt Lake City metro); or Toronto, Canada (relocation assistance available)

Your role is not instruction. It is motivation.

The most meaningful support you can give a student at 99% is to refuse to accept anything less than completion. If that expectation feels uncomfortable, this role is not for you. If it energizes you—because maintaining a high standard is how you signal belief in a student's ability—read on.

At Alpha, academic learning happens through AI-driven applications. No traditional lectures. No physical textbooks. You will spend half your day facilitating one-hour life-skills sessions on topics like public speaking, focus, and constructive feedback. The other half is dedicated to working one-on-one or in small groups, analyzing student progress via Coachbot data, and driving each learner toward 100% weekly completion of their app-based goals. You will not follow a rigid script—workshop frameworks exist, but high performers customize them and create new content when gaps emerge.

Success in a quarter means every student in your cohort achieves weekly app targets, passes the Test2Pass for all life-skills modules, and 90% or more report they love working with you. Falling short on any of these three metrics means the role has not been fulfilled. In your first year, you will master Alpha's systems; once you demonstrate consistent performance, advancement to Lead Guide becomes possible, where you mentor new team members while continuing to work directly with students.

If you prefer traditional teaching structures, need prescriptive lesson plans, or see warmth and rigor as conflicting values, this position is not a fit. If your background includes athletic coaching, camp counseling, tutoring where you refused to let students give up, or performing for young audiences, the final interview stage is a full on-campus day coaching actual Alpha students. If that prospect excites you most, submit your application now.

What you will be doing

  • Facilitating one-hour life-skills sessions for K-8 groups covering public speaking, focus, feedback, and related competencies, customizing existing frameworks and creating new modules when necessary
  • Conducting daily individual and small-group coaching sessions to ensure every student reaches 100% of weekly app-based learning targets, leveraging Coachbot insights, Alpha's motivational structures (including school currency and leaderboards), and personal relationships to overcome resistance
  • Overseeing Test2Pass administration (Alpha's competency-based evaluation) for each life skill, then coaching students through retakes until mastery is demonstrated
  • Adjusting your approach across a broad developmental spectrum—from kindergarteners requiring high-energy engagement and physical activity to eighth graders needing candid conversations and personal accountability
  • Serving as the adult who maintains rigorous expectations while remaining someone students want to confide in; building rapport earns you permission to challenge, and challenging communicates your confidence in their potential

What you will NOT be doing

  • Delivering traditional whiteboard instruction; academic content is embedded in the applications, not delivered by you
  • Building curriculum materials from the ground up; you animate existing frameworks through presence and narrative skill
  • Passively monitoring students on devices; motivation in this context is proactive, individualized, and sustained
  • Reducing weekly targets to manufacture success; when a student falls behind, the intervention focuses on the student, not the goal
  • Assessing homework, preparing students for standardized exams, or handling parent outreach; Campus Leads manage family communication, and the other tasks do not exist at Alpha

Key responsibilities

Guarantee that every student in your K-8 cohort completes their weekly learning targets, achieves mastery in each life skill, and finishes the year reporting a positive relationship with you.

Candidate requirements

  • Able to work on-site at an Alpha campus located in Denver, CO; Atlanta, GA; Oklahoma City, OK; Tulsa, OK; Nashville, TN; Austin, TX; Brownsville, TX; Fort Worth, TX; Houston, TX (Central, South, or The Woodlands); Park City, UT; or Toronto, Canada (relocation assistance available)
  • Bachelor's degree in any discipline
  • Minimum 3 years of direct experience working with K-8 students in settings such as classroom teaching, coaching, tutoring, camp counseling, or youth program management
  • Ability to provide a concrete example of motivating a K-8 student to achieve a challenging objective: the goal itself, your specific actions, and the result
  • Comfort with AI-driven instructional delivery while you concentrate on motivation and life-skills development
  • Daily use of generative AI platforms (such as ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude)
  • Authorization to work in the United States without requiring visa sponsorship (or in Canada for the Toronto location)

Nice to have

  • Background in youth sports coaching, debate programs, camp leadership, theater, or after-school initiatives where you held direct responsibility for driving student motivation toward defined outcomes
  • Demonstrated record of personal excellence (academic, athletic, or professional) that makes maintaining high standards for others an authentic expression, not an adopted behavior
  • Communication and presentation skills sufficient to engage a room of 12-year-olds for an hour without relying on volume or authority
  • Proven ability to convert disengaged or oppositional students into active, invested learners
