Outdoor Education Coach   $100,000 USD/year

Description

  • On-site, full-time position in Dripping Springs, TX (close to Austin)
  • Annual compensation: $100,000, distributed weekly; full health, dental, and vision coverage starting day one
  • Relocation assistance provided

Holding students to high expectations is the most powerful form of support you can offer a young person in difficulty. If that principle resonates with you — and if you'd rather demonstrate it through field-based learning than classroom theory — this role warrants your attention.

This position diverges from conventional teaching. At Waypoint Academy, students progress independently through adaptive learning platforms rather than attending traditional lectures. Your function centers on coaching competencies: focus, perseverance, and objective achievement. You will facilitate outdoor sessions — one-hour life-skills modules addressing public speaking, collaboration, leadership, and critical thinking through experiential, adventure-oriented activities designed to challenge and engage. Every session concludes with a Test2Pass evaluation, where participants demonstrate mastery of the target skill in applied context.

Your remaining time involves motivation sessions: brief, individualized coaching dialogues informed by Coachbot analytics, designed to connect with students and advance their academic objectives. You will observe measurable, immediate transformation as reluctant learners evolve into self-assured achievers. Your performance metrics are transparent: student satisfaction scores (90% benchmark) and weekly goal completion rates (100% benchmark).

High-performing coaches advance to senior leadership positions: overseeing coaching teams and influencing student development strategy. Beyond that lies full operational ownership of the school — accountability for outcomes, culture, and institutional direction. Dripping Springs offers proximity to Austin's technology sector, live music venues, and culinary landscape, with over 300 days of sunshine annually and year-round access to Hill Country recreation.

If you have long believed there exists a more effective approach to student engagement, submit your application now.

What you will be doing

  • Facilitating 1-hour outdoor life-skills sessions (focus, public speaking, teamwork, leadership) using nature-based, adventure-oriented activities according to Waypoint's structured curriculum and operational playbook
  • Conducting individualized motivation sessions with students, leveraging Coachbot analytics and profile information to guide them toward weekly academic targets
  • Administering Test2Pass mastery assessments at the conclusion of each workshop: students must demonstrate the targeted life skill in practical application before session completion
  • Exercising outdoor safety protocols prior to every field session: evaluating routes and weather conditions, inspecting equipment, and following Leave No Trace principles as outlined in Waypoint's field standards
  • Energizing sessions through narrative techniques, adaptive customization, and the presence required to maintain engagement across K-12 learner cohorts in both indoor and outdoor environments

What you will NOT be doing

  • Presenting academic lectures or conducting traditional classroom instruction. Students engage with course material via adaptive EdTech platforms; your responsibility is coaching them through obstacles, not transmitting curriculum.
  • Supervising students during screen time. Your focus will be actively leading outdoor workshops, facilitating motivation sessions, and supporting students encountering difficulty.
  • Assessing assignments, developing lesson plans from the ground up, or preparing students for standardized assessments.
  • Adjusting standards downward for struggling students. Objectives remain fixed, mastery defines success, and your responsibility is coaching students to achievement — not relocating the target.
  • Handling parent correspondence or administrative operations. These functions fall under the Campus Lead's purview.

Key responsibilities

Enable K-12 students at Waypoint Academy to develop enthusiasm for learning, accelerate their educational progress, and acquire enduring life competencies.

Candidate requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in any discipline
  • Minimum 3 years of direct experience working with K-12 students in educational, camp, coaching, or outdoor instruction contexts
  • Documented history of exceptional personal accomplishment: competitive sport participation, academic distinction, or high-level professional achievement
  • Effective public speaking ability with capacity to engage and sustain attention from large student groups in both indoor and outdoor settings
  • Innate capacity to build rapport with K-12 learners as an inspiring role model who challenges growth, rather than a peer who permits disengagement
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States without requiring visa sponsorship
  • Availability to work on-site at Waypoint Academy's campus in Dripping Springs, TX (near Austin)

Nice to have

  • Background as an athletic coach, outdoor expedition leader, camp administrator, or wilderness education instructor
  • Current first aid or wilderness safety credentials
  • Knowledge of adaptive learning systems such as Khan Academy or IXL
  • Experience in youth development, experiential pedagogy, or outdoor youth education programs
