Outdoor Education Coach   $100,000 USD/year

Description

  • Dripping Springs, TX (near Austin): full-time, on-site
  • $100,000 annually, paid each week; health, dental, and vision coverage begins day one
  • Relocation assistance provided

The greatest support you can offer a student in difficulty is maintaining high expectations. If you agree with that philosophy — and if you'd prefer to demonstrate it outdoors with a group of learners rather than articulate it in a classroom — read on.

This role differs from conventional teaching. Waypoint Academy students don't sit in traditional rows listening to lectures. They progress through adaptive learning platforms independently while you guide them in focus, persistence, and achieving objectives. You'll take them outside: one-hour experiential workshops focused on life skills such as leadership, public speaking, problem-solving, and teamwork, delivered through adventure-based activities designed to be both challenging and engaging. Every session concludes with a Test2Pass mastery assessment — students must exhibit the target skill in practical application before completion.

The remainder of your schedule consists of motivation sessions: brief, one-on-one coaching interactions informed by Coachbot analytics, where you engage with students and guide them toward their academic objectives. You'll observe students evolve from hesitant participants to self-assured performers — visibly and in real time. Your performance metrics are transparent: student satisfaction scores (90% benchmark) and weekly goal completion rates (100% benchmark).

High-performing coaches advance into senior positions: leading a coaching team and influencing how the school cultivates and inspires students. Beyond that lies full school leadership — accountability for outcomes, culture, and operations. Dripping Springs sits 30 minutes from Austin's technology sector, live music venues, and culinary landscape, offering 300+ days of sunshine and year-round Hill Country outdoor recreation.

If you've always known a more effective approach exists for connecting with students, submit your application now.

What you will be doing

  • Facilitating 1-hour outdoor life-skills workshops (leadership, public speaking, teamwork, focus) through adventure-style, nature-based activities following Waypoint's curriculum and playbook
  • Conducting individual motivation sessions with students, leveraging Coachbot analytics and student profile information to guide them toward weekly academic objectives
  • Completing each workshop with a Test2Pass mastery assessment: students must display the targeted life skill in authentic context before session conclusion
  • Exercising outdoor safety protocols prior to every session: evaluating routes and weather conditions, inspecting gear, and following Leave No Trace principles according to Waypoint's field standards
  • Energizing sessions through storytelling, creative adaptation, and the enthusiasm required to maintain engagement from a K-12 learner cohort both indoors and outdoors

What you will NOT be doing

  • Presenting academic lectures or teaching from the front of a classroom. Students acquire course material through adaptive EdTech platforms; your function is to coach them past obstacles, not present curriculum.
  • Supervising students during screen time. You'll be actively leading outdoor workshops, facilitating motivation sessions, and coaching students through challenges.
  • Evaluating assignments, creating lesson plans from the ground up, or preparing students for standardized examinations.
  • Reducing expectations for a student facing difficulties. Objectives are authentic, mastery is required, and your responsibility is to coach students to success — not adjust the standard.
  • Handling parent correspondence or administrative duties. Those functions are assigned to the Campus Lead.

Key responsibilities

Enable K-12 students at Waypoint Academy to develop enthusiasm for school, accelerate their learning, and acquire enduring life skills.

Candidate requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in any subject
  • At least 3 years of experience working directly with K-12 students in school, camp, coaching, or outdoor education settings
  • Proven track record of high personal achievement: competitive athletics, academic honors, or elite professional performance
  • Compelling public speaker who can energize and hold attention from large groups of students, indoors and outdoors
  • Natural ability to connect with K-12 learners as a positive role model who pushes them to grow, not as a buddy who lets them off the hook
  • Legal right to work in the U.S. without visa sponsorship
  • Able to work in-person at the Waypoint Academy campus in Dripping Springs, TX (near Austin)

Nice to have

  • Experience as an athletic coach, outdoor trip leader, camp director, or wilderness program instructor
  • First aid or wilderness safety certification
  • Familiarity with adaptive learning platforms such as Khan Academy or IXL
  • Background in youth development, experiential education, or outdoor youth programming
