Instructor de Habilidades para la Vida   $100,000 USD/year

Description

  • In-person position at Alpha School's campus in Dorado, Puerto Rico
  • Annual salary of $100,000 ($50/hour, 40 hours/week), with weekly payment
  • Teaching certification not required; Spanish proficiency beneficial

The kindest thing you can do for a student who reaches 99% of their target is to refuse to declare it complete. If this expectation unsettles you, this position is not the right fit. If it energizes you because maintaining high standards demonstrates your belief in a child's potential, continue reading.

Alpha School operates on a 2 Hour Learning framework: students in grades K-8 complete a full day's worth of academic work in approximately two hours using adaptive learning technology. No traditional lectures. No conventional textbooks. Your role centers on what technology cannot replicate — developing students' life skills including public speaking, concentration, collaboration, and the ability to give and receive constructive feedback.

Approximately 60% of your time will focus on individual student motivation: reviewing learning platform dashboards and Coachbot data, identifying where a third grader struggles with fractions or a fifth grader resists reading assignments, then helping them breakthrough. The remaining 40% involves facilitating interactive, hour-long skill-building sessions that resemble improv practice more than traditional instruction. Students must demonstrate mastery through Test2Pass evaluations before progressing.

This position offers clear advancement. You'll guide a small cohort and learn Alpha's methodology during your first year. Demonstrate your ability to hold all students accountable to 100% goal achievement while maintaining strong satisfaction metrics, and you'll have opportunities to advance to Lead Guide, then Campus Lead (responsible for operating an entire school). You'll witness a student who avoided eye contact in September confidently present to a room full of parents by spring.

Apply if you believe seating 30 children in rows to listen to one adult undermines what children are capable of achieving.

What you will be doing

  • Guiding K-8 students individually and in small groups through adaptive learning platforms, utilizing Coachbot analytics and dashboards to identify learning obstacles and root causes
  • Implementing Alpha's motivation system (leaderboards, incentive structures, weekly goal-setting protocols) to ensure every student progresses at the target rate
  • Facilitating hour-long, experiential life-skills sessions covering public speaking, focus, teamwork, and constructive feedback exchange (project-driven and participatory, never lecture-based)
  • Conducting Test2Pass mastery evaluations and upholding standards: students advance only when they demonstrate genuine comprehension
  • Establishing student trust so rigorous accountability feels empowering rather than punitive

What you will NOT be doing

  • Delivering lectures or traditional academic lessons (students master core subjects through adaptive platforms, not direct instruction from you)
  • Creating lesson plans from the ground up — Alpha supplies curriculum and operational guides; you execute them with enthusiasm and narrative skill
  • Evaluating homework assignments or preparing students for standardized testing; these elements are absent from this model
  • Handling parent communications or administrative operations — Campus Leads manage those functions, allowing you to concentrate on your cohort
  • Providing passive supervision while students work on devices; active coaching is the core of this role

Key responsibilities

Guide a cohort of K-8 students to achieve 100% of their academic and life-skills objectives.

Candidate requirements

  • Available to work on-site at Alpha's Dorado, Puerto Rico campus
  • Bachelor's degree in any discipline
  • 3+ years of direct, hands-on experience working with K-8 (kindergarten through 8th grade) students in teaching, tutoring, youth programming, camps, or athletic coaching capacities
  • Demonstrated record of high personal achievement, whether academic, athletic, or professional
  • Authorization to work legally in the United States or Puerto Rico without requiring visa sponsorship

Nice to have

  • Bilingual fluency in English and Spanish to strengthen connections with students and families in the Dorado area
  • Coaching experience in environments where elevated standards produced quantifiable results (competitive athletics, debate, performing arts, or selective youth initiatives)
  • Track record facilitating youth workshops, summer programs, or after-school activities where you created the programming, not merely provided oversight
  • Knowledge of adaptive or application-based learning systems (e.g., Khan Academy, IXL, DreamBox)
